The 7000 works great as a base radio but I decided to wire up my car for mobile capabilities in case the need should arise.
I sometimes take road trips, however I also want to be prepared if disaster strikes! I also decided that I wanted to make the setup as portable
as possible. Meaning, no drilling holes and all cables should be easily hidden when the radio is not in the car. The whole setup should be easy to
setup from start to finish, allowing the radio to go from house to car within 5 minutes or less. For antennas, I am currently using
the Shark 20 meter and 40 meter whips. The mount is the High Sierra mag mount.
First, I own a Honda CRV and in these cars there is a center console that is empty. I made a bracket for this area to mount the radio head and microphone on.
Next, I wired up the power cable to the battery. The battery is in the passenger side.
I ran the cable up in-between the hood area by the door and under the plastic down into the feet area.
I tucked the cables up and out of the way so the passengers feet would not interfere with the cables at all.
Voila, We have power in the car!
Install the bracket for the radio head.
Then, attach radio head and radio. As you can see from the pictures, the radio is in a white plastic basket. I did this so that it would not get kicked by feet
or lie on the rug of the carpet and take in dust, dirt, etc. There is a lot of industry strength Velcro attached to the bottom of the basket that prevents it
from moving easily. The basket also has plenty of holes for adequate airflow. I will be installing 2 bungee cords that will hold the radio down
into the basket. I am also debating about bringing my antenna tuner so I have a wider bandwidth with my antenna.
View from the top.
I am almost finished. Just need to route a ground wire for the setup, install the antenna and try it out! More pictures to come...
